Before a single motor starts spinning, before the first solder joint is made, there’s a decision that influences everything that follows: the choice of frame. The frame of an FPV drone is far more than just a structure to which electronics are attached. It defines the flight characteristics, crash resistance, aerodynamics, and ultimately the character of the finished drone. A well-chosen frame is the subtle difference between a copter that flies exactly as you imagined and one that just doesn’t feel quite right.
FPV frames can be roughly categorized based on their intended use. Racing frames are designed for minimal weight and maximum stiffness—narrow arms, minimal material, and short wheelbases. Freestyle frames, on the other hand, are built more robustly and can withstand harder impacts without complaint, though they do weigh a bit more. Cinematic frames and cinewhoop setups prioritize a stable camera mount and often feature prop guards or a deadcat configuration (What are deadcat frames: https://www.fpv24.com/de/blog/122/deadcat-frames), in which the front arms are pulled backward, causing them to disappear completely from the camera’s field of view. For long-range builds, there are wider 7-inch and 10-inch frames that accommodate larger propellers and thus provide more efficient thrust.
By far the most important material in FPV frame construction is carbon fiber. It combines low weight with high stiffness, making it superior to aluminum or pure plastic in nearly all relevant properties. The wall thickness of the arms—typically between 3 and 5 mm for 5-inch frames—is a key factor in crash resistance. Replacement arms are available separately for many frames—an important consideration when making a purchase decision.
