A Power Distribution Board (PDB) can be a key component of an FPV drone, regulating the power supply and distribution to the drone’s various components. It enables an effective power supply.
Behind every reliably functioning FPV build lies a well-thought-out power supply design. The battery provides the raw voltage—but the individual components of a drone require different voltage levels and need a stable, clean power supply that doesn’t drop even under varying loads. What the flight controller (FC) often handles via various solder pads isn’t necessarily sufficient in all cases. This is exactly where power distribution boards and battery eliminator circuits come into play.
A Power Distribution Board (PDB) is responsible for evenly distributing the battery voltage to individual ESCs and, if necessary, other power consumers. In many modern builds, as mentioned above, this function is integrated into the 4-in-1 ESC or the flight controller stack, which significantly reduces the amount of wiring needed and makes the build more compact. For specific setups—such as larger copters with individually wired ESCs or platforms that require separate power management—a dedicated PDB is still the cleanest solution. It ensures clearly defined current paths, short cable runs, and minimizes the risk of voltage drops under load.
A Battery Eliminator Circuit (BEC) serves a different but equally important purpose: It converts the battery voltage—typically 3S to 6S—into a regulated low voltage, usually 5 V or 12 V, and uses it to power components that require these voltages. These include the flight controller, the video transmitter, LEDs, and—in cinematic setups—external action cameras or camera systems that are to be powered by the drone’s battery without having to carry their own battery. A properly functioning BEC also prevents interference in the video image that can result from an unstable power supply.
