Lithium-ion batteries are the underrated alternative to the dominant LiPo batteries in FPV sports—and for certain applications, they’re simply the better choice. While LiPo batteries excel with high C-rates and fast discharge times, Li-ion cells stand out with a significantly higher energy density and lower weight per unit of capacity. This makes them particularly appealing for anyone prioritizing maximum flight time and the lowest possible total weight—especially long-range builds, fixed-wing aircraft, and efficient cinematic setups that don’t require extreme peak currents.
The best-known Li-ion cell in the FPV sector is the 18650 cylindrical cell, which is the go-to choice for long-range pilots thanks to its widespread availability, high quality, and long service life. Cells from Panasonic or comparable high-performance cells typically offer 3,000 to 3,500 mAh at a moderate discharge current—significantly more capacity than a LiPo cell of the same weight. Combining several 18650 cells into a pack results in a battery pack with long flight times that ages much more reliably than a LiPo, provided it is not overloaded.
In addition, Li-ion batteries play an important role as a power source for remote controls. Many high-end transmitters rely on proprietary Li-ion packs or standardized 18350 and 18650 cells, as well as 21700 cells, which enable a significantly longer runtime per charge than conventional NiMH packs—especially important for long days of flying at competitions or during professional film productions.
