The motor is the heart of every FPV drone. It determines how aggressively the drone accelerates, how stable it is in the air, and how much room there is for tuning. If you’re building a new copter or want to upgrade an existing one, you can’t avoid choosing a motor—and it’s worth making that choice carefully, because no other component influences a drone’s character as directly as the motors do.
FPV drone motors are, without exception, brushless outrunners—or brushless motors for short. They are durable, efficient, and deliver far more power than their compact appearance suggests. The most important specifications to consider when selecting a motor are the stator size and the KV rating. The stator size—specified as a four-digit number such as 2207 or 2306—describes the diameter and height of the stator core and provides information about the possible torque. The KV rating indicates how many revolutions per minute the motor spins per volt of battery voltage: lower KV values are suitable for large propellers and maximum efficiency, while higher KV values are suited for small propellers and high RPMs—typical for racing and aggressive freestyle.
For the common 5-inch freestyle or cinematic build powered by 6S batteries, motors in the 2207 to 2308 range with 1750 to 2700 KV have become the standard. Smaller 3- to 4-inch builds typically use 1404 or 2004 motors, while micro-whoops rely on particularly light and small units in the 0702 or 0802 format. Long-range and cinematic setups with large propellers, on the other hand, benefit from low-RPM motors with a larger stator and a lower KV rating.
