The Ultimate Guide to FPV Drone Motors and Propellers

Anyone who has ever built an FPV drone from scratch knows that moment: You’re staring at the endless selection of motors and propellers in the store and wondering, “Will these really work together?” The wrong choice leads, at best, to poor flight characteristics and, at worst, to smoking ESCs.

In this guide, we break down the secrets of KV, stator size, and pitch so that your next build doesn’t just fly—it performs.

The Language of Motors: What the Numbers Reveal

Before we combine components, we need to understand the markings on the motor bells.

1. The KV Rating: The RPM Promise

The KV rating indicates how many revolutions per minute a motor produces per volt applied (at no load).

  • The rule of thumb: The larger the drone and the higher the battery voltage, the lower the KV rating.
  • If you multiply the KV by your battery voltage (e.g., 22.2V for 6S), you get the theoretical maximum RPM under full load.

2. Stator size: Displacement for the air

The four-digit number (e.g., 2306) describes the heart of the motor:

  • The first two digits: stator diameter in mm.
  • The last two digits: stator height in mm.
    A larger stator generates more torque. But be careful: A motor that’s too wide increases the moment of inertia and reduces agility, while an extremely tall stator can cause thermal issues. The ideal ratio is usually between 3 and 5—a balanced mix of power and efficiency.

Propeller Geometry: More Than Just Plastic

95% of all propellers follow this formula: diameter x pitch x number of blades.
A popular propeller like the Ethics S4 (5x3.65x3) means:

  • 5-inch diameter
  • 3.65-inch pitch —this is the distance the propeller would advance during an ideal rotation
  • 3 blades

Important: A high pitch provides massive thrust at high speeds but makes the drone feel “spongy” at low RPMs. A low pitch, on the other hand, offers precise control while cruising.

The ideal setup for every class

Tiny Whoops (65 mm – 75 mm)

These little speedsters need pure RPM! Since they’re usually powered by 1S batteries, we’re looking at a range between 19,000 and 30,000 KV.

  • Note: In this class, propellers are often simply pressed onto the shaft. Check carefully to see if you have a 1.0 mm or 1.5 mm shaft!
  • Recommendation: BetaFPV 0702 with 25,000 KV for the ultimate indoor punch.

Background Info: How is size measured for Tiny Whoops?

For large drones (5-inch, 7-inch), the specification always refers to the maximum propeller diameter that the frame can accommodate. However, there is often confusion with the smallest drones, the Tiny Whoops, because two different measurements are used here:

  • The wheelbase (motor-to-motor): Designations such as 65mm (e.g., Meteor65) or 75mm describe the diagonal distance between the centers of two motors. This is the most common measurement for the frame itself.
  • Propeller diameter: The wheelbase alone doesn’t tell the whole story. A 65mm frame typically uses 31mm (1.2-inch) propellers. A 75mm frame, on the other hand, can accommodate 40mm (1.6-inch) propellers.

Important when buying: Always refer to the manufacturer’s specifications for propeller size. Not all 65mm frames are the same—some are designed for 31mm propellers, while others (such as some “65 Pro” variants) already use 35mm propellers. If only millimeters are specified, divide the value by 25.4 to convert to the inch sizing used by most stores.

Pro tip on motor shafts:

In this class, the shaft diameter is crucial. While 07xx motors almost always have a 1.0 mm shaft, 11xx motors often jump up to 1.5 mm. If you buy the wrong propellers, you’ll either not be able to mount them or they’ll have dangerous play!

Cinewhoops & Cine Drones

Here, smooth operation is more important than top speed. To carry heavy cameras like a GoPro, we usually use 1404 motors on 4S batteries.

The trick: Use 4-blade propellers with a low pitch. More blades provide more “grip” in the air and make the footage smoother.

The 3- to 4-inch freestyle class: pure agility

If we leave out the propeller guards and go with open propellers, we enter the dynamic freestyle class. Here, your battery setup is the main factor determining your choice of motors:

  • 3-inch & 3.5-inch setups: For 4S batteries, 1404 to 1604 motors with approx. 3800 to 4500 KV are ideal. If you’re using 6S batteries, you should stick to the 2,500 to 2,850 KV range.
  • 4-inch setups: If you want to take a more aggressive approach, go for slightly larger 1804 to 2004 motors. Combined with 4x3x3 props, the drone will really take off.

Important note: With motors of this size, there’s a dangerous mix of shaft sizes! Some motors use a standard 5 mm shaft (with a nut), while others use a 1.5 mm shaft (for screwing on the props). When buying propellers, make sure that matching inserts (adapters) are often included so they’ll fit both shaft types.

5 inches: The premier class of freestyle

Here, you’re spoiled for choice.

  • 6S setup: 1700 to 2100 KV is the standard.
  • Motor Tip: 2207 stators are perfect for freestyle because they respond quickly. 2306s offer more torque and are ideal for racers who use high-pitch propellers.
  • Classic combo: iFlight Xing2 motors with Gemfan Hurricane or Ethix S4 props.

7 inches: Long-range efficiency

In long-range flying, every milliamp counts. We use large motors (e.g., 2806.5 or 2809) that operate efficiently even at low RPMs and stay cool.

Pro(p) Tip: 2-blade propellers are the most efficient, while 3-blade props feel smoother.

Pro Tip for Emergencies

Did you wreck a motor bell in the field and don’t have an exact replacement with you? As long as the dimensions (e.g., 2306) and the number of magnets are the same, you can often screw a bell from another manufacturer onto your stator. It’s not a permanent solution, but it’ll save your flying day!
