
Anyone who has ever built an FPV drone from scratch knows that moment: You’re staring at the endless selection of motors and propellers in the store and wondering, “Will these really work together?” The wrong choice leads, at best, to poor flight characteristics and, at worst, to smoking ESCs.
In this guide, we break down the secrets of KV, stator size, and pitch so that your next build doesn’t just fly—it performs.

Before we combine components, we need to understand the markings on the motor bells.
The KV rating indicates how many revolutions per minute a motor produces per volt applied (at no load).
The four-digit number (e.g., 2306) describes the heart of the motor:
95% of all propellers follow this formula: diameter x pitch x number of blades.
A popular propeller like the Ethics S4 (5x3.65x3) means:
Important: A high pitch provides massive thrust at high speeds but makes the drone feel “spongy” at low RPMs. A low pitch, on the other hand, offers precise control while cruising.
These little speedsters need pure RPM! Since they’re usually powered by 1S batteries, we’re looking at a range between 19,000 and 30,000 KV.
For large drones (5-inch, 7-inch), the specification always refers to the maximum propeller diameter that the frame can accommodate. However, there is often confusion with the smallest drones, the Tiny Whoops, because two different measurements are used here:
Important when buying: Always refer to the manufacturer’s specifications for propeller size. Not all 65mm frames are the same—some are designed for 31mm propellers, while others (such as some “65 Pro” variants) already use 35mm propellers. If only millimeters are specified, divide the value by 25.4 to convert to the inch sizing used by most stores.
In this class, the shaft diameter is crucial. While 07xx motors almost always have a 1.0 mm shaft, 11xx motors often jump up to 1.5 mm. If you buy the wrong propellers, you’ll either not be able to mount them or they’ll have dangerous play!
Here, smooth operation is more important than top speed. To carry heavy cameras like a GoPro, we usually use 1404 motors on 4S batteries.
The trick: Use 4-blade propellers with a low pitch. More blades provide more “grip” in the air and make the footage smoother.
If we leave out the propeller guards and go with open propellers, we enter the dynamic freestyle class. Here, your battery setup is the main factor determining your choice of motors:
Important note: With motors of this size, there’s a dangerous mix of shaft sizes! Some motors use a standard 5 mm shaft (with a nut), while others use a 1.5 mm shaft (for screwing on the props). When buying propellers, make sure that matching inserts (adapters) are often included so they’ll fit both shaft types.
Here, you’re spoiled for choice.
In long-range flying, every milliamp counts. We use large motors (e.g., 2806.5 or 2809) that operate efficiently even at low RPMs and stay cool.
Pro(p) Tip: 2-blade propellers are the most efficient, while 3-blade props feel smoother.

Did you wreck a motor bell in the field and don’t have an exact replacement with you? As long as the dimensions (e.g., 2306) and the number of magnets are the same, you can often screw a bell from another manufacturer onto your stator. It’s not a permanent solution, but it’ll save your flying day!
