
The world of digital FPV has seen a massive leap in performance thanks to the DJI O4 transmission system: crystal-clear images, extremely low latency, and a rock-solid connection. With the lightweight DJI O4 Air Unit (often referred to as Standard/Lite), DJI brought a true lightweight (just 8.2 grams) to the market, designed specifically for micro drones, whoops, and beginners. However, many freestyle and cinematic pilots felt the standard camera was missing one thing: a truly wide field of view (FOV).

This is exactly where the new DJI O4 Wide Air Unit comes in. It was developed as a direct upgrade to the classic Air Unit and has a decisive ace up its sleeve: an ultra-wide field of view of a whopping 159° (in 4:3 aspect ratio).

The new DJI O4 Wide Air Unit skillfully bridges the gap between the classic standard version and the uncompromising Pro model. It retains the feather-light design and compact dimensions of the standard Air Unit, but pairs them with a crucial upgrade for demanding pilots. The biggest criticism many freestyle and cinematic pilots had of the first-generation O4 was its comparatively narrow field of view. With the Wide version, DJI responds precisely to this feedback: The field of view (FOV) expands to a whopping 159° in 4:3 format. This allows significantly more of the frame and the immediate surroundings to be seen in the image. It creates an extremely immersive flying experience and provides the confidence needed to maneuver through even the tightest spaces without losing sight of your surroundings. Despite the wide angle, the built-in 1/2-inch CMOS sensor remains, delivering razor-sharp images and enabling onboard recording in 4K/60 fps. This makes it easy to save the weight of an additional action cam on small drones.
Despite the wider field of view, pilots don’t have to compromise on the powerful O4 transmission technology. The system transmits with a maximum signal range of up to 10 kilometers (according to FCC standards) or, within the EU, with an excellent, rock-solid connection. The live feed is transmitted at up to 60 Mbit/s and displayed on the Goggles in smooth 1080p at 100 frames per second. When paired with the DJI Goggles 3 (in Race Mode), the Air Unit also transmits with a minimum latency of just 20 milliseconds.
While the Pro version, weighing over 30 grams and with significantly larger dimensions, is designed more for 5-inch rigs or Cinelifters, the Wide Air Unit remains uncompromisingly optimized for lightweight construction. The transmitter module measures 30 × 30 × 6 millimeters, and the camera measures 20.5 × 14 × 20.5 millimeters. Together, the system weighs 13.3 grams, making it perfect for micro drones, Whoops, toothpick drones, and minimalist lightweight builds. In addition, just like the standard model, the Wide version features 23 GB of built-in storage that saves video recordings directly to the drone. In a direct comparison, the standard Air Unit, weighing 8.2 grams, offers the ultimate weight advantage for the smallest 2-inch frames, but has a narrower field of view. The Pro Air Unit, on the other hand, showcases its strengths with a larger 1/1.3-inch sensor, 4K/120fps recording, and an even lower latency of 15 milliseconds in the 3-inch class and beyond. The Wide Air Unit thus positions itself as the ideal, no-compromise all-around solution for the discerning freestyle and micro pilot.

Since the O4 Wide Air Unit, at 13.3 grams, is slightly heavier than the classic standard Air Unit (which weighs only 8.2 grams), the issues of vibration and damping play a role that should not be underestimated in ensuring smooth flight and recording results. If a disruptive rolling-shutter effect (shaking or so-called “jello” effects in the image) occurs during operation—especially when electronic image stabilization is activated—this is usually due to the transmission of mechanical vibrations from the frame to the camera housing. To counteract this, you should first check the vibration-damping design between the camera and the drone frame and, if necessary, make it softer. It’s also advisable to check that the screws securing the camera to the drone are tight. Due to the aforementioned weight difference, the Wide variant requires a slightly softer damping structure than the heavier Pro model to achieve exactly the same vibration-free image stability.
The DJI O4 Wide’s camera has different dimensions than that of the O4 (Lite). Fortunately, the hole spacing has remained identical at 16 mm.
